Lesson 13

NOT IN VAIT (AFTER ALL)

Aim: That the learners will tell others to trust Christ because He is alive.
Scripture: John 20:1-31
Memory Verse: John 20:21b – Jesus said,…”As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”  (NIV)

In Advance
1.      Pray
2.      Memorize John 20:21b
3.      Prepare
For ENTRANCE – if possible, bring before the class an empty bird’s nest with broken eggshells.  If you cannot find any, prepare to describe one orally.
4.      Study John 20:1-31
Background of the Scripture passage used:
We have the culmination of John’s Gospel in John 20.  All the essential situations are moving towards this event. This event happened many years ago in Jerusalem.  The tranquility of the Passover Sabbath was gone.  It was a high day, a day when the Sabbath coincided with the “first day of unleavened bread” (Exodus 12:16,17; Leviticus 23:7).  The holiness of such a day was felt all around Judea.  The burial of Jesus on Friday night before the start of the Sabbath was hurried.  The body of Jesus had not been properly prepared for burial (Matthew 27:59, 60; Mark 15:46; Luke 23:53-56; John 19:40-42).  The women had prepared “spices and ointments” to retard decomposition.  The atmosphere was one of mourning.

THE PERSONAL SUBSTITUTE

Lesson 12

THE PERSONAL SUBSTITUTE

Aim:  That the learners will dedicate their lives to Christ out of gratitude for what He has done.
Scripture:  John 19:1-37
Memory Verse: Romans 12:1,2 – Therefore I urge you brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God-this is your spiritual act of worship. (NIV)

In Advance
1.      Pray
2.      Memorize Romans 12:1,2
3.      Prepare
a.        For ENTRANCE – a script for the monologue, A Prisoners Thoughts.  Before class begins, assign one learner to practice it.
b.        for PERFORMANCE – copies of the Memory Verse in the vernacular translation.
4.      Study John 19:1-37
Introduction to the Scripture passage used:
John 19 is the darkest, most unpleasant chapter in this Gospel.  But behind the tragedy appears the glory of the Cross.  The first line of a best loved hymn by Rev. George Bennard is remembered for such event:  On a hill far away stood an old rugged Cross, the emblem for suffering and shame; And I love that old cross where the dearest and best for a world of lost sinners was slain.  This lesson allows us the opportunity to comprehend the redemptive work of Jesus Christ and to respond by offering our lives to him.

THE TRUE SOURCE OF LIFE

Lesson 11

THE TRUE SOURCE OF LIFE

Aim: That the learners will draw their spiritual nourishment from Jesus Christ.
Scripture: John 15:1-16
Memory Verse: John 15:7 – If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you will, and it will be done unto you. (NIV)

In Advance
1.      Pray
2.      Memorize John 15:7
3.      Prepare
a.      for ENTRANCE – a newly cut branch
b.      for SUBSTANCE – write down the questions for each group on different sheets of paper.
4.      Study john 15:1-16
Background of the Scripture passage used:
The fifteenth chapter of John is one of the familiar chapters in the Bible.  How disturbing is the analogy of the vine and branches to one who is not “bearing fruit”!  Yet those who are actually abiding in Christ know how significant these truths are.  The analogy of the vine was very common in Palestine.  This is not surprising since grape culture has always been a major item in the agriculture of the country.
The vineyards of Palestine are usually rather small in size, but they are numerous.  Grapes can be grown almost anywhere.
The vines a pruned severely and lie on the ground or upon the stones in the field. These grapes are among the best-tasting in the world.
The harvesters sing a song of joy when they gather and tread out the grapes in the winepress.

WHO’S THE BOSS?

Lesson 10

WHO’S THE BOSS?

Aim:  That the learners will humbly serve others.
Scripture: John 13:1-17
Memory Verse: Matthew 20:28 – Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. (NIV)

In Advance
1.      Pray
2.      Memorize Matthew 20:28
3.      Prepare: For SUBSTANCE – Lecture on the background of footwashing in the Jewish culture
4.      Study John 13:1-17
Introduction to the passage:
In John 13 we begin our study of the private ministry of Jesus Christ.
In John 1-12, we studied His public ministry.  Now we are permitted to go behind the scenes and learn what was heard only by the disciples.  Most of the material of John 13-17 is not reported in any of the other three Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke).

A SHEPHERD PLUS

JESUS THE SAVIOR

Christian and Missionary Alliance Churches of the Philippines

Lesson 9
A SHEPHERD PLUS

Aim: That the learners will trust Jesus as their guide.
Scripture: John 10:1-16; Psalm 23, Isaiah 53:6
Memory Verse: Psalm 23:3 – He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. (NIV)

In Advance
1.      Pray
2.      Memorize Psalm 23:3
3.      Study John 10:1-15
Background of the Scripture passage used:
The Bible dictionary refers to two kinds of shepherds. First, those who have care of sheep, and second, those who have care of human being.
A literal shepherd must find grass and water in a dry and stony land (Psalm 23:2).  He must guide the flock of sheep into the pastureland.  Ideally, a shepherd should be strong, devoted, and selfless.
The Scripture earnestly stresses the serious responsibility of shepherds.  They have to do proper pastoral care.  The New Testament shows Christ as the Shepherd.
4.      Prepare: Write or type the hymn Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us on sheets of paper.

SAVIOR LIKE A SHEPHERD LEAD US
Savior like a shepherd, lead us,
Much we need Thy tenderest care;
In Thy pleasant pastures feed us,
For out use They folds prepare.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast bought us, Thine we are;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.

We are Thine do Thou befriend us,
Be the guardian of our way;
Keep Thy flock, from sin defend us,
Seek us if we go stray.

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Hear, oh, hear us when we pray;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus
Hear, oh, hear us when we pray.
